Sandra Jahnes: Winter has arrived! As we admire eaves painted in a fresh coat of snow, some of us find ourselves (gasp!) enamored by New England’s wintry might. We like to see architecture as something through which we enjoy nature,…
Located in Atelier 505, a major residential and performing arts facility in Boston's South End, Uniform (www.uniformboston.com) is a men's clothing and accessories store that specializes in urban casual clothing and accessories that are fashion oriented, value driven, and utilitarian in nature.
Uniform's design is focused on a folded / planar, stark white 'proscenium' floating within a dark, monochromatic shell. The unapologetically industrial shell consists of cold rolled steel display panels, freestanding racks and custom built storage units, a concrete floor custom scored and stained, and the ductwork of the residential lofts above, all providing a surprisingly comfortable and visually neutral backdrop for the cacophony of Uniform's merchandise.
The crisply detailed 'proscenium' defines the virtual stage within which the charismatic owner and his associates entertain and cater to their customers.
Uniform has been recognized as one of the best men's casual clothing stores in Boston since it's opening, both in Boston Magazine's 'Best of Boston' and The Improper Bostonian's 'Boston's Best'.
